Historic England give listed status to Weir War Memorial.

The Secretary of State for Culture Media & Sport has added Weir War Memorial to the list of buildings of Special Architectural or Historic interest and has been granted Grade II listed status.

The announcement was made in time for Armistice Day and the Remembrance weekend, a special service was held at the memorial on Friday November 11th.

Weir and District War Memorial was unveiled on Saturday 14 September 1935 by PC Richard Coates, the first man from Weir to join up to fight in the war. The ceremony was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bacup and many relatives and friends of the fallen.

A number of repair projects have since been undertaken on the memorial including some re-lettering.

Cllr Peter Steen, member of Bacup Rotary Club who have worked for this recognition welcomed the announcement;

“Bacup Rotary were pleased to work in partnership with Rossendale Borough Council in securing the Heritage Lottery grant to restore the War Memorial and are proud to keep it maintained. The granting of the list 2 status is a tribute to the late Geoff Law who was the driving force behind the original bid.”
