Double Paralympic silver medallist Tom Hamer was the special guest at Rossendale Leisure Trust’s ‘Celebration of sport’ event at the Riverside, Whitworth.
The event, which took place on Friday 21st October, was part of the Trusts annual acknowledgement of sport in the Valley.
The evening played host to a variety of achievers including teachers and children from Thorn primary school, Ski Rossendale, fundraisers for Rossendale Hospice Vikki Hardwick and Richard Watts, promising badminton player Akshay Narayan and Whitworth Water Ski Academy.
Guests were also treated to a live Q & A with Tom Hamer about his experiences in Rio and what it takes to become a professional athlete.
Jodie Shenton from Rossendale Leisure trust said:
“It was great to have Tom here at our event to share his story and get some insight into life as a Paralympian.Tom is an inspiration to a lot of people, especially those from Rossendale who are looking to excel in their sport.”
This is the first time the event has been organised to recognise local people for their own personal sporting achievements, whether it be trying a new sport or raising money through participation in sport.
This inclusive message is at the heart of the Leisure Trust’s vision and ethos, to keep the fun and enjoyment in sport and continue to provide something for everyone.
