New and improved site launches making access to best-rated health apps easier for Rossendale residents

People in Rossendale can now get easy access to the best-rated health apps available online.

A new and improved version of the ORCHA online platform has recently launched to help the thousands of people in the area who use apps every day to help manage health issues and medical conditions as well as to generally improve their health and wellbeing.

Volunteer recognised for supporting people with Cancer

A Haslingden resident has been given an award for her work supporting those affected by cancer.

Carol James who volunteers for the East Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen Macmillan Community Cancer Information and Support Service and is based at Burnley General Hospital, has been awarded Volunteer of the Year.

The award, on behalf of the East Lancashire Hospital Trust’s STAR Awards 2017, was for Carol’s work in supporting the establishment of the support service across the Burnley General Hospital site last year.

Council statement on Monday’s attack in Manchester

Stuart Sugarman, Chief Executive of Rossendale Council, said: “Our thoughts are with the victims of last night’s horrendous events and their families. It is shocking and sad news to wake up to especially as it took place so close to home. We will, of course, as a Council offer any support we can to anyone from our borough affected by these awful events as well offer our support to the people of Manchester at this terrible time.”

Last chance to register to vote and have your say

Voters who want to have their say in this year’s general election must register today – Monday, May 22.

The election takes place next month on June 8 and locally voters will cast their ballots to elect an MP for Rossendale and Darwen.

While the deadline to register to vote is 11.59pm on May 22, the deadline to register for a postal vote is 5pm on May 23, and the deadline to register for a proxy vote is 5pm on May 31.

Second mountain bike event comes to the heart of Rossendale’s ‘Adrenaline Valley’

With excitement already building for the Northern Grip festival – an annual celebration of Mountain Bike culture coming to Lee Quarry and Stubbylee Park on July 8 and 9 – another mountain biking event happening in Rossendale is set to whet everyone’s appetites further.

The Hope/PMBA Enduro series Round 2 is set to take over Lee Quarry in Bacup on Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4 promising some high octane thrills and spills in the heart of the borough.

Our festival hub will be in the amazing Stubbylee Park – nestled at the foot of Lee Quarry this hidden northern gem of a Victorian park offers stunning spaces, woodland, cafe and perhaps most importantly an easy gateway to the thrills and rides we’ve got planned for the day. We’ll be taking over the rear of the park for the weekend bringing plenty of festival treats to add to the recently opened pump track

Over £15,000 raised for charity by outgoing Mayor

The outgoing Mayor of Rossendale raised nearly £15,500 for his chosen charities during his year in office.

Councillor Granville Morris, who represents Greenfield, attended many mayoral engagements since taking on the role of the borough’s first citizen in May 2016.

Fundraising events throughout the year, organised by the Mayor, Mayoress and his Charity Committee, have included coffee mornings, afternoon teas, meal evenings, a fashion show, musical concerts and a Grand Prize Draw.

Council colleagues step up for Hospice

Colleagues at Rossendale Borough Council are putting their best feet forward to raise money for Rossendale Hospice.

The group of seven colleagues that includes chief executive Stuart Sugarman, are preparing to participate in the Great Manchester Run that takes place in Manchester city centre on Sunday, May 28.

The Futures Running Team as they have named themselves, aim to raise £1,000 for the Hospice, selected as it is a good cause and its work affects many people in the borough.

Former Council employee’s marathon charity effort

A former Rossendale Council employee who suffers from a rare muscle wasting condition will take part in a triathlon later this month to raise money for charity.

Muscular dystrophy sufferer Sean Spencer, 36, from Rawtenstall will take part in the Rossendale Triathlon on Sunday, May 28 in a relay team with two friends to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy UK – a charity which works to fight more than 60 muscle-weakening and wasting conditions.

Look before you book

Residents are being advised to make sure they are aware of the food hygiene ratings of a café, restaurant or takeaway before they visit.

Food safety officers from Rossendale Borough Council visit all premises in the borough for inspections and give a rating from 0 to 5, with 5 being the top score for hygiene and food safety measures.

New blog by Civic Pride Rossendale: New project to combat dog fouling

Civic Pride Rossendale recently started a new project of creating yellow signs on the pavement in areas where dog fouling has been an ongoing problem. Early signs are good, in that the number of both unbagged and bagged and discarded faeces appear to have been reduced. This is obviously in line with our hopes and expectations but why does it work?

Locals honoured at Whitworth town awards

Whitworth was the scene for celebration recently with local people gathering to commemorate the best of the town.

The Mayor of Whitworth, Councillor Madeline De Souza, hosted the big celebration evening in April, with awards handed out to some of those who have contributed most to the local community.

The Riverside Centre, on Market Street, was the venue for the evening with a special red carpet laid on for guests who were treated to a hot buffet and entertainment from local singer and guitarist, Graham Shellard along with a special appearance from John Alexander, ‘the singing jeweller’.

Waste collection delays for a few properties

Due to a vehicle breakdown, collections from a small number of remote properties throughout Rossendale will be delayed.

Efforts are being made to catch up as soon as possible and any build-up of additional waste will be taken when the collections are made later this week or early next week.

The Council would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Council takes action to alter unlawful shopfront

Rossendale Council has taken action to have a new shopfront in Rawtenstall altered after it contravened planning laws and received complaints from local residents.

The Council worked with the owners of Higher Cloughfold Store on Newchurch Road, Rawtenstall after the shopfront was erected unlawfully.

And the Council has since received several positive comments from residents on the improvements made.

Lee Quarry is unique in UK mountain biking. It’s a place with a long history but only the past decade has been about mountain biking.

Prince’s Trust training opportunity for young people

Local young people are being offered the chance to take part in a 12-week course to gain practical skills, secure valuable qualifications and meet new people.

The Prince’s Trust’s Team Programme will take place at Nelson Fire Station from Monday, May 8 in conjunction with the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
